Two seater sofa before new covers. Mrs. Liz F. wanted furniture covers and curtains to achieve a whole new look for her kitchen/dining room. A difficult task as she was aiming to achieve a mix of contemporary chic but also to still fit in with the traditional style of her barn conversion home. First step was to request a home visit from her local Plumbs consultant….

Matching up colours with Laura Ashley Curtain fabric Mrs. Fleuriot had already bought a yellow floral design fabric from Laura Ashley for curtains. Behind the sofa is a very large window and patio door with curtains and pelmet. Trudie the Plumbs consultant was then able to give good advice about a suitable fabric to be used as a cover for the sofa.

Grey and yellow looks promising A cotton chenille fabric looks a good choice as it provides a very soft cotton feel combined with great washability. The aim would be to make a cover in the grey chenille, yellow curtains and also to make some scatter cushions from the curtain fabric to give a well designed and beautiful end result.

Decision made This is a great decision. The small grey sample is going to be used to make a padded pelmet for over the yellow floral curtains, while the chenille in the swatch book is to be used for the new designer loose covers. Next stage is measuring the furniture.

Measuring the sofa for designer loose covers in a cotton chenille fabric For designer loose covers the measuring process is very detailed involving 100 – 150 different measurements. This includes every part of the furniture including any loose seat, back or arm cushions.

Pattern pieces are drawn to scale. The measurements and photographs go to the drawing room. A skilled process where all the pattern pieces are laid down as two dimensional shapes. This is done using the measurements and photographs from the consultant plus the years of skill and experience from the pattern drawer.

Pattern pieces are digitised. The carefully drawn scale pattern is now transferred to computer so all the pattern pieces can be laid down in the correct order. At every stage Plumbs use a combination of skill, experience and technology to make sure that the pattern fits together correctly, thus ensuring that the covers will fir perfectly.

Computer guided cutters The sections of the cover are produced by computer guided cutters ensuring a very high level of accuracy.

Cut pattern pieces Once all the sections of the cover have been cut they are passed on to sewing. It takes many years to become a Plumbs sewer as the standards needed are so high.

Covers taking shape The new sofa cover now starts to take shape literally before your eyes as the pattern pieces are sewn together. One order can take up to two hours to sew together.

Not forgetting the wash label Most Plumbs covers are fully machine washable which is great news for many family homes.

Checking the measurements Once sewing is complete, there is a very careful checking procedure. Going right back to the original measurements of the furniture, the dimensions of the new cover should match perfectly. Zips and hems are also checked.

Careful packing The examiner is happy that everything is as it should be. The covers can now be packed and sent back to the consultant to arrange fitting.

Fitting the designer loose covers in a cotton chenille fabric. The fitting process involves the home consultant arranging a convenient time to call and fit the new covers. Plumbs do not make any extra charge for this service.

Tucking in. Extra fabric is allowed for in the seat back are so the cover can be tucked in. This is important as the tuck areas provide an anchor which helps to stop movement of the cover.

Fitting the cushions. All the cushion covers are zipped for easy removal for washing.
