The Reupholstering Process:
• When reupholstering an item, Plumbs craftsmen begin by stripping it and then inspecting the frame.
• The structure is then assessed and tightened as necessary, followed by an examination and possible replacement of the internal components including: webbing, springs and seat cushions.
• The seat and back cushions are re-stuffed if necessary using a fi brous fire-retardant substitute or foam.
• The next process typically involves ‘Deep Buttoning’. A time consuming task, this is the compression of buttons at regular intervals through a deep filled upholstery pad, followed by stitching under the tension at the back. The craftsman then forms a pattern of deep stuffed padded pockets, which are arranged in a diamond shape. The art of Buttoning gives the item an indulgent, voluptuous look made fashionable in the Victorian era.
• The final process when reupholstering is the application of the top cover using the customer’s chosen fabric.
• Plumbs prides itself on its people and are full members of the furniture ombudsman. They are proud to be revitalising the art of reupholstery.
