Customer Stories for traditional covers, designer covers, decra covers and reupholstery
When you choose furniture covers from Plumbs, there are three options - decra, designer or traditional. Decra covers are the least expensive and best for practicality. Designer covers offer hard wearing rigid fabrics and are more contemporary. Traditional covers are hand made and give the closest possible fit. These three customer stories describe each one, so you can decide which one is best for you. Click on a story below to read more.....

The Home Consultant Visit & Measuring
3 sofas to be transformed.
With 3 sofas to cover and a busy household, the priority here was to find a plain fabric with excellent washability.
|
Discussing Ideas with a Plumbs Consultant.
Having looked at a few options, the obvious fabric to consider was Maddison as it combines a lovely feel with great washability. Maddison is a great value fabric in a wide range of colours launched by Plumbs in 2009.
|
Making a choice.
Time to choose a colour. Maddison has 13 colour options. Mrs. Lavelle chose a honey colour, very similar to the existing.
|
The cushions need replacing too!
As the seat cushion fillings were also flattened from heavy use, it’s a good time to get thos replaced too. Plumbs offer replacement cushion fillings. Of course we guarantee they’ll fit the new covers too.
|
Measuring the furniture
Checking all the details.
The next stage is taking all the measurements for each of the three sofas. This can take a while as there can be up to 1000 measurements needed to make a single furniture cover.
|
Careful measuring.
Comprehensive photographs back up the measurements. Every part of the furniture is checked and recorded.
|
Final decision on colour.
After much discussion the final decision on colour is made. All these details will pass back to the factory for the covers to be made.

Covers Being Made in the factory in Preston
Making the covers from the measurements and photographs.
It takes many years of skill and experience to hand cut furniture covers. Following the measurements and photographs taken in the home, the hand cutter creates all the pattern pieces needed.
|
The skill of hand cutting.
The hand cutter is truly a skilled person, using nothing more than scissors and tape measure backed up by experience to create a set of covers that are an exact match to the measurements taken by the consultant.
|
Front of arm.
Here the cutter is creating the front of the sofa arm, often called a scroll.
|
Sewing the covers.
Next stage is all the pattern pieces are sewn together. Plumbs skilled sewers need many years of experience to ensure all the pieces fit together correctly. All seams are overlocked and hemmed to provide a clean looking durable finish.
|
Final checks are made.
The last part of the process in the factory involves an examiner checking every detail to ensure the measurements are correct, there are no loose hems and the washing label is fitted.
|
Finished covers boxed up ready to be returned to the consultant.
The covers are carefully packed ready to return to the Plumbs consultant for fitting.
|
Covers Being Fitted and the Final Result
Fitting the new covers.
The Plumbs consultant arranges to come and fit the new covers. There is no extra charge for the fitting service. Maddison fabric is very easy to remove and refit and doesn’t crease at all, even after washing.
|
Fitting the cushions.
Mrs. Lavelle had decided to replace the cushion inners at the same time as having new covers. So the sofas really are having a complete transformation
|
A neat finish and a perfect fit.
Once the covers are fitted, the room looks fantastic. The consultant will only leave when the customer is completely satisfied.
|
Final touches.
The last finishing touches include straightening all the seams and levelling the valance. Then it’s a fabulous moment when Mrs. Lavelle gets to see the transformation o
