Loose Covers, Reupholstery & the Environment
Loose Covers & Reupholstery
There can be little doubt that it is preferable to re-cover or reupholster a good piece of furniture than to send it to land-fill.
Plumbs encourages its customers to keep their old sofas and give them a new look through reupholstery, or loose covers. Over 95% of all furniture styles can be covered or reupholstered including Parker Knoll, Multiyork, Cintique, Parker & Farr, Sofa Workshop, G Plan and M&S. Good furniture will almost inevitably be made from hard wood but unfortunately is increasingly in short supply in the world.
Show-wood furniture with polished hard wood is a delight to see and to sit in. With a strong movement nowadays to retro style furniture, refurbishment of 50’s and 60’s chairs is an ethically and stylish way to bring individuality to your home. And with all other styles of furniture, your room can be brought right up to date with modern fabrics and designs without shipping a suite half way across the world.
However the method of refurbishment will also have an impact on the environment as re-upholstery will inevitably require the removal of bulky fillings and foam. At Plumbs we are currently looking at unique ways to recycle this old foam removed from furniture which could eventually finds its way into carpet underlay and not go to land-fill. This is in addition to our current efficient computer cutting of fabric reduces waste to a minimum.
Curtains
When is come to curtains there is a very direct and simple solution to help the environment and substantially cut energy bills by performing the simple task of closing curtains as dusk falls each day. Energy conservation experts from the World Heritage Trust arrived at this startling conclusion after using thermal imaging cameras to highlight areas of the home which leak the most energy.
The thermal imaging exercise really proved that very simple measures, like closing curtains and using full length curtains, can have a dramatic effect and make a dramatic improvement on the amount of heat being lost through the windows.
Funded by the Climate Challenge Fund, the researchers uncovered few surprises after playing with their thermal imaging cameras. Energy Officer for the World Heritage Trust, noted:
Plumbs Curtains are fully lined and incredibly energy efficient. This can be improved further by requesting thermal blackout linings from the Plumbs consultant.
