5 excellent reasons to re-upholster your furniture

Reupholstery is one of our core services here at Plumbs, and as a family business with more than 60 years of history to our name, you can count on us to be able to answer any questions you might have about the process! It’s something you may or may not be considering for your own furniture, and though reupholstery can be quite an involved process, it brings a whole host of benefits that are well worth the time and effort. So if you’re still on the fence, here are our five top reasons why you might want to get your furniture re-upholstered.

1. Your furniture is looking tired and worn

This is one of the simplest (and most common) reasons why homeowners tend to reupholster their furniture. And that probably comes as no surprise - after all, your furniture goes through a lot, often seeing daily use. They tend to have a reasonably long lifespan (the average sofa tends to last anywhere between 7 to 15 years, for example), eventually there will come a time when daily wear and tear starts to leave its mark. Especially when there are kids or pets in the house! But when your furniture starts to show its age, reupholstery is the perfect solution to get it looking at its best again.

2. You want to save sentimental furniture

We’ve already touched upon how furniture can last well over a decade if it’s properly looked after. That means that they can be present for a lot of meaningful moments in your life, and can easily start to earn sentimental value. (For example, an armchair might hold extra special meaning for you if you’ve inherited from an older relative.)

So in situations like this, you might be understandably reluctant to dispose of it once it starts looking past its best. Happily, that’s where upholstery can be useful, allowing you to spruce up a beloved sofa or chair, leaving you with furniture that retains its value to you, while looking just as pristine (or even more so) as the day you got it.

3. It’s cost-effective

Most good furniture is built to last, and that often means that it doesn’t always come cheaply. While higher price tags can actually sometimes be a good thing - reassuring you against a false economy item - the flipside is that they can be harder to replace, especially if similar chairs or sofas have risen in value since you last bought yours. Fortunately, reupholstery is often a more inexpensive option compared to just replacing your furniture wholesale, so it can be a good idea to explore if you’re on a budget.

4. It’s environmentally friendly

It can be easy to underestimate the scale of furniture’s impact on the environment. Every new piece of furniture requires a considerable amount of raw materials, and replacing them every few years can quickly lead to pile-ups on landfills, resulting in a hugely damaging waste of materials like wood, plastic and steel. Reupholstering your furniture invariably means that it lasts longer, making it much easier to reduce your consumption, and limit your impact on the environment.

Here at Plumbs, we’re passionate about minimising our own impact on the environment, which is why we make sure to have expert re-upholsterers stationed all over the country - so that no matter where you live, your environmentally-friendly furniture won’t travel far for a spruce-up.

5. You just feel it’s time for a change

One thing about taking care of older chairs and sofas is that their style tends to stay intact too, which can sometimes lead them to look disconcertingly out of step with the rest of your interiors. If you feel your furniture is in need of a style update, or if your tastes have simply changed over time, then that’s exactly where reupholstery can help - refreshing the appearance of your furniture to bring it bang on-trend. Best of all, since reupholstery is a traditional craft, you’ll be supporting traditional British workmanship by local craftsmen and women, too.
