There’s no doubt that the average sofa sees a lot of wear and tear over the years. From late-night dinner spills to small mucky hands that haven’t seen a baby wipe just yet, they go through a lot! It’s not just dirt either, which sofa covers can easily fix, but the weight of holding people up year after year, too.
Now, aesthetic damage doesn’t always have to be the end for your sofa, as that’s where our fitted sofa covers can help to revitalise it entirely. But sadly, they can’t manage to solve every issue by themselves - so if your sofa is displaying any of the following signs, it might be time to start thinking about replacing it entirely.
Creaking, squeaking, and popping noises are generally not good signs when you sit on your sofa. In fact, this is probably your sofa’s way of telling you it’s had enough. Any dodgy noises could indicate structural damage in the joints or the springs, neither of which is good news. The noises aren’t just about annoyance - they could indicate that your sofa is becoming gradually more unsafe to sit on, so it’s never anything to ignore!
Over time, sofas can develop some pretty strong odours. Whether it’s spilt milk, food leftovers, or suspicious mud stains (let’s hope it’s mud), sometimes, no matter how much cleaning you do, the smells just won’t leave! If you’re starting to catch a whiff every time you sit down despite regular cleaning, it’s probably time for a change.
This is another structural issue that it’s worth keeping an eye out for. It’s not going to be hard to notice - when your sofa starts to get noticeably less comfortable, that might be a sign that it’s providing less support for your back. And if that happens, it’s not just damage to your sofa that you have to be concerned about - it could even end up causing you aches and pains, too! It could be something that’s easily fixed with complete reupholstery - but if it’s coupled with one or more other issues on this list, it could just be a sign that your sofa is finally past rescuing.
On the whole, we’re a more mobile society than we used to be. People are getting married later in life, and for better or worse we’re often moving house more often. So if you’ve recently moved into a new space and you find your sofa doesn’t fit, no amount of new sofa covers or reupholstery might be able to solve that problem. If that’s the case, you may want to think about replacing it entirely (but that doesn’t mean you have to dispose of it entirely - if it’s still in decent enough shape, you might be able to sell it for a tidy enough sum!).
In fact when your sofa is looking a little worse for wear, in most cases you might still be hesitant to get rid of it. New sofas are expensive and, let’s face it, you still love the one you have! As long as your sofa isn’t showing any signs of serious structural damage or un-shiftable smells, in most cases you’ll be able to breathe new life into it simply with a brand new bespoke sofa cover. That’s exactly where we can help at Plumbs - we offer a fantastic selection of sofa covers in a range of colours for you to choose from.
