Kids Have Flown the Nest? It’s Time to Refresh Your Home!

If your children have grown up and recently moved into their own homes, it may be hard at first to adjust to a quieter “empty nest”. It can also be an exciting time in your life - you can begin to truly enjoy your home again, reclaiming the space and creating an environment for yourself to spend time relaxing in. Here are some simple tips to employ to revamp and refresh the main rooms in your house.

Refresh Your Furniture: Choose Light!

We’re all guilty of choosing darker fabrics that can hide a multitude of sins - now there are no kids or teenagers around, however, it’s time to embrace a fresh and bright new look! A neutral base colour works well on both sofas and chairs because it creates a blank canvas for you to add splashes of colour to with bright or patterned accessories such as scatter cushions and flowers.

Throw out the Throws: Upgrade to a Loose Cover

Throws can be a useful solution when you want to protect your furniture from small feet and dirty hands, but after years of moving them after they slipped, it may be time to put them to better use.  If you no longer love the style of your sofa’s fabric, a better alternative to a throw is a removable sofa cover.  They still have the advantage of being washable - yet are much more close fitting, stylish and practical. (Don’t know what loose covers are? You’ll be amazed at what a good solution this is for giving sofas and chairs a facelift. See how they work here.)

Update your Accessories

People find that when they have children they tend to hide away anything fragile or impractical, especially if you have boys that like to play indoor sports!  Now that they’ve moved on you can begin to reintroduce those accessories that make a house feel more homely – without the fear of shattered pieces.

Reclaim Your Bathroom

Sharing a bathroom with teenagers can take it’s toll on any family.  Some mornings in a busy household can feel like Piccadilly Circus, and you can almost guarantee that everyone will want to use the bathroom at the same time!

Now is the perfect time to take back your bathroom and create a haven. Without the hair products, make-up, and general clutter that teenagers tend to acquire, your bathroom may seem quite bare - fill this extra space with items that create a calm and happy atmosphere.  Fresh flowers, pretty perfume bottles and tasteful art will create the indulgent yet relaxing space you deserve.
