100 mile charity walk for Managing Director

If you've been kepping up to date with our Facebook  and Twitter, you may have noticed some posts about our Managing Director's upcoming challenge. Well, now we've got all the details for you!

When Sarah turned 50, she set herself a challenge to walk a marathon every year for a decade - and it seems each one is getting more extreme than the last! Having completed marathons in London, Edinburgh, Iceland, and the Arctic, Sarah is now off to walk 100 miles of the Camino in Spain.

All of this is done in aid of Walk the Walk, a breast cancer charity for whom Sarah has raised over £6300 for previously. If you would like to sponsor Sarah, details can be found here.

We thought we'd take the chance to sit down with Sarah and have a chat all about her challenge...

What prompted you to start this decade challenge?

"I've always been a believer in having a challenge for each decade, and so when I could see 50 on the horizon, I knew it was time to really push myself. I'd previously taken part in marathons, so I set my sights on ten more of them! Whilst staying fit and having fun, I was also able to help fundraise for a really brilliant cause, so it ticked every box."

Why did you choose to support Walk the Walk?

"Walk the Walk raise money to support research into breast cancer, and help those who have been diagnosed with it. Though I haven't been through it myself, the impact that it has on peoples lives is truly significant. Of course, there are plenty worthwhile charities who do similar work, but the difference with Walk the Walk was its approach. One big part of the challenge is decorating a bra to walk in - I just really like that they help to bring a lighter side to an awful experience."

What's been the most challenging part of your walks so far?

"There always tend to be a few challenges before the walk itself. Fitting in training around a busy work and family life is always tough! The training schedule for this challenge has been particularly intense, so its been a task to do that alongside running the company and being a grandma! I often don't know anyone in the group either. Lots of them tend to chat online beforehand, but it's all part of the challenge for me.

The temperature in the Arctic was also pretty interesting - you know its cold when your eyelashes start to freeze!"

How much have you raised so far? Have you got a total figure in mind?

"Since I started with Walk the Walk challenges, I've raised £6383 - and that's not included what's been raised for my Camino challenge. We recently had a cake sale, which always does well so hopefully we can add some more to that total this time around! By the end of the decade, I would like to have raised over £15,000 - that would be a really great achievement."

Where will you go next?

"I'd like to take on their Peru challenge. It's a hilly one, so it seems best to take it on now, whilst my knees can still handle it!"

Well, from everyone here at Plumbs, good luck, Sarah! We'll be posting regular updates on our social media, so check back there to see more.
