Quick tips: get a statement piece of furniture

Feel like your interiors could use something a little extra? Sometimes, it can be hard to pin down exactly what’s missing. You might know what we’re talking about - like your space needs that special something to bring it all together. Well, that’s exactly what a statement piece of furniture is made for. And if you need a little bit more inspiration, that’s where we can help right here at Plumbs.

What is a statement piece of furniture?

Essentially, a statement piece is an item that becomes the central focus of your design. It should draw the gaze of anyone who walks into the room, and enhance the overall personality and atmosphere you want to cultivate for your space. It’s often used to elevate interior design schemes by creating a sense of drama. We’ll admit, it can sometimes be a somewhat nebulous term, and one man’s defining statement piece can be another man’s passing novelty.

So what defines a statement piece? Well, it could be all sorts of things. A statement piece may be defined by its vibrant colour, or unusual shape, or its clear associations with a certain concept or place; possibly somewhere you’ve been, or somewhere you’d like to go. Often it’s all in the eyes of the beholder - which means that when you’re choosing one for your own home, it pays to trust your instincts!

The case for functional statement pieces

Most statement pieces can broadly be described as functional, decorative, or somewhere roughly in between (such as mirrors or lighting). When you’re picking one out for your interiors, choosing between decorative or functional is likely one of the first decisions you’ll need to make. And while sculptures and paintings are great if you’ve got the room available for them, they can bring a certain amount of risk in the average family home, as they don’t generally take too well to being bumped or scraped against or knocked over.

With that in mind, it’s easy to see why sofas, chairs and tables are some of the most common statement pieces; functional furniture is designed to be used, and therefore often stands up better to the rigours of daily family life. Just make sure to give them a bit of breathing room if you can, and allow them space to stand out so that they can properly serve as the focal point for your room. Don’t forget that it doesn’t have to be something large to make a statement!

Consider colour carefully

The colour and pattern of your statement piece plays a big part in defining its character - and by extension, the personality of the space around it. That’s largely because we instinctively attach very distinct meanings to different colours, which speak to a very deep part of our psyche.

Red for example is powerful and vibrant, suggesting energy and passion. It tends to dominate whatever room it finds itself in, commanding your attention. Orange on the other hand is similarly energetic, but it’s a more gentle kind of energy - all about fun and liveliness, and creativity. Yellow is cheerful and happy, used to inject a sense of sunny optimism into a room, whereas blue is cool and calming, associated with intelligence and thoughtfulness. Purple, meanwhile, has a long history of being associated with royalty, leading to its modern connotations of luxuriousness. If you’re still settling on exactly what would work with your space, it’s well worth playing around with colour. You might be surprised at the results!

Make it personal

Above all, don’t forget that your statement piece should be something that represents you and your home. Avoid choosing one for the sake of other people, or with things like Instagram and Pinterest in mind. When all your guests have gone, or your post has slid off the bottom of everyone’s timelines, it’s you who’ll be spending time with this item every day, so make sure it’s something you love, and it resonates with you. If it helps, you can think about the personality of your room, and the sort of atmosphere you want to help cultivate. Sometimes it can take a bit of time to work out what that is, so don’t feel rushed about choosing!

And of course, it doesn’t have to be particularly expensive either. Something as simple as a new sofa cover or a new chair cover can inject fresh colour and personality into your space, transforming the mood of your interiors entirely. Similarly, you could even reupholster a beloved piece of furniture, to bring your interiors back on track. We can help with all of that here at Plumbs -
