Caring for your shutters

Here at Plumbs, all our bespoke plantation shutters come with a 10-year quality guarantee as a testament to their craftsmanship and standard of installation. To keep them looking their best, we’ve gathered our top tips on caring for your shutters from day-to-day.

Caring for your shutters after installation

If your shutters have been installed within the last 48 hours, the right care is essential to help all materials and fixings settle correctly.

  • Do not clean your shutters immediately after installation. This helps to avoid disturbing any fixtures or adhesives that may still be setting.
  • Gently check the operation of all panels. If any hinges or louvres feel stiff, do not force them.
  • Remove installation dust using a dry microfibre cloth. Avoid using water or cleaning products at this stage.

Everyday care and cleaning

After the initial settling period, we recommend regular dusting to keep your shutters looking their best. Follow these simple steps:

  • Close the louvres so they lie flat, and gently wipe each slat with a dry microfibre cloth.
  • Tilt the louvres in the opposite direction and repeat.
  • Avoid feather dusters, as these can spread dust rather than remove it.
  • For hard-to-reach areas, use the soft brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner.

Top tip: Light weekly dusting helps prevent dirt build-up and keeps your shutters operating smoothly.

Deep cleaning your shutters

For a more thorough clean, follow this approach. Always test any cleaning solution on a discreet area first.

  • Mix a few drops of mild dish soap with warm water.
  • Dampen (but do not soak) a microfibre cloth.
  • Wipe each louvre individually, following the direction of the grain.
  • Immediately dry each section with a clean cloth to prevent streaks or warping.
  • Use the same technique to clean the frames, hinges, and control rods.

Avoid using harsh chemicals, ammonia, bleach, alcohol-based cleaners, or excessive water. Do not use abrasive sponges or scouring pads.

Further care and questions

Alongside our 10-year quality guarantee, all Plumbs shutters come with a complementary aftercare pack. In this you will find a selection of useful items, including touch up paint and spare louvres. These can also be purchased separately if more are required. Please note, we do not recommend trying to replace the louvres yourself, but instead offer a refitting service.
