What is reupholstery?

As a traditional craft that has been practiced for generations, reupholstery offers cherished furniture a second lease of life, as your sofa or armchair is restored from the inside out.

Your upholstery expert begins by removing your existing fabric, taking your much-loved furniture back to its frame. We’ll then tighten any loose frame joints, replace any broken springs or webbing and begin to rebuild each layer of your furniture to restore its comfort. Finally your furniture is finished in the beautiful fabric of your choice, with any wooden or button details reflected for a complete restoration.

Crafted by Brian

As part of our Preston reupholstery team, Brian spends his day transforming furniture for happy customers. We asked him about what makes the art of reupholstery so special.

“We’ll transform the familiar into something extraordinary”

Having been an upholsterer for over 40 years, I’ve learned that good quality furniture, especially pieces with a story, always deserve another chance. When you’ve loved a piece – maybe bought it when you first set up home or inherited from family – you don’t want to lose it. Carrying that story on is always one of my favourite parts of the job.

For me, reupholstery is also all about sustainability. If your furniture is able to be reused or reupholstered, you’ve got to go with it for the sake of the planet. Otherwise all that quality goes to waste, and good quality furniture deserves better than that.

Frequent asked questions

  • What is the meaning of upholstery?

Upholstery refers to the materials and craftsmanship used to make furniture comfortable and beautiful, including the fabric, padding, springs and internal fillings. Reupholstery is the process of restoring or replacing these elements to give existing furniture a completely refreshed look and feel.

  • Is it cheaper to upholster or buy new?

This depends on the quality and construction of your existing furniture. For many premium brands, such as Parker Knoll, Duresta or G Plan, reupholstery can offer a cost-effective alternative to replacing a well-made suite. It also gives you the freedom to create something far more individual, with access to hundreds of fabric choices not typically available on new furniture.

To help spread the cost, we also offer 6 and 12 month interest-free credit plans, subject to age and status. Your home consultant will be happy to provide more information during your appointment.

  • How long does it take to reupholster furniture?

The timescale for reupholstery can vary depending on the size and style of your furniture, as well as your chosen fabric. However, your furniture will not be away from your home for the entire duration of the order. We only arrange collection once your fabric has arrived and production availability has been scheduled.

  • Can all furniture be reupholstered?

In most cases, yes. The vast majority of sofas, armchairs and suites can be successfully reupholstered. Occasionally, certain styles or furniture conditions may not be suitable, which is why every order begins with a free home consultation where we can assess your furniture and provide tailored advice.

  • Is reupholstery worth it?

Absolutely. Reupholstery offers a more sustainable alternative to buying new furniture, while also allowing you to preserve pieces with sentimental or practical value. It’s a wonderful way to create something unique to your home, whether you’re restoring a treasured family piece or refreshing a favourite chair with a completely new look.

At Plumbs, we believe every piece of furniture deserves a second, third or even fourth chance, and we take great pride in helping craft the next chapter of every transformation.

  • Do you offer home consultations?

Yes, every reupholstery order begins with a free home consultation with no obligation to place an order. It’s the ideal opportunity to explore our fabric collection, discuss your ideas and receive expert advice from a friendly local consultant in the comfort of your own home.

You’ll also receive a personalised quotation, which remains valid for 28 days, giving you plenty of time to make your decision.

  • What fabrics can I choose from?

Here at Plumbs, we offer a carefully curated collection of over 800 fabrics, chosen for their quality, timeless appeal and beautiful designs. From elegant plains and soft textures to bold statement patterns, there’s something to suit every style of home.

We also work with a selection of premium fabric houses within our Prestige collection, including iconic names such as William Morris and Sanderson, alongside innovative modern brands like Aquaclean, known for combining practicality with exceptional design.
