Plumbs Urge People to Recycle and Renovate
Plumbs, the loose cover and reupholstery experts are encouraging people to reuse, recycle or repurpose their furniture instead of buying new.
A recent blog on the Plumbs website looked at data collected by Kantar Paints, and showed that just 2.5% of people have refurbished or renovated an old piece of furniture, a figure which is staggeringly low when compared with the fact that over half of us would choose to recycle other items such as bottles, tins, and newspapers.
Such a low percentage may also seem surprising when we consider the economic climate the UK has experienced over the last few years. The recession has meant many homes cut back on items, but haven’t necessarily adopted a ‘make do and mend’ attitude towards furniture. However, this doesn’t seem to be the case in the way of DIY as over 46% of people have carried out some sort of DIY work to their home.
Brand Development Manager, Joanna Whitworth had this to say on the issue:
“At Plumbs, we’d like to see more people have a go at skills like reupholstery and refurbishment; it means we can put less old furniture in landfill and make some really great pieces at the same time. We know people in the UK love DIY – there are countless TV shows and magazines dedicated to the topic – so why do we seem to steer clear of reusing or renovating older furniture?”
Plumbs are planning to post a video to their site in order to help people create their own reupholstery pieces. They hope by showing the steps behind the process of reupholstery it will inspire amateurs to breathe new life into their furniture.
