Choosing the right curtain fabrics for easy maintenance

Like sofa cover fabrics, some curtain fabrics are easier to care for than others. By selecting a fabric that is low maintenance, you won't have to worry about specific cleaning guidelines or routines. And best of all, any maintenance that is needed you only have to do every so often. We have a wide selection of curtain fabrics that are easy to maintain:

  • Velvet curtains
  • Linen curtains
  • Cotton curtains
  • Polyester curtains

Caring for your new made-to-measure curtains

  • Vacuum your Curtains regularly using a brush attachment, to keep your curtains dust and dirt free.
  • Regular redressing of the curtains may be required to maintain appearance. This will help drapes to remain in place. The tightening of the drapes within the tie-backs or hold backs can help the curtains to remain fixed in place.
  • Steaming your curtains in situ can help to remove any creases.
  • Black out linings on your curtains can help to minimise fading caused by sunlight.
  • Note on Chenille and Velvet fabrics the pile may flatten in areas. This may result in a 'shaded' area on contact areas but this is normal for this type of fabric. Vacuum using a brush attachment to reduce flattening.
  • If you have ordered coordinating scatter cushions with your curtains, plump them up regularly to maintain their shape and appearance.

Preventing curtain fading from sun damage

Choosing curtains with energy reflective lining is the best way to prevent your curtains from sun damage or fading.

Our curtains with energy reflective curtain lining bring you the benefits of both thermal and blackout curtain lining. Blocking out all light which prevents sun damage and curtain fading, Plumbs energy reflective curtains look their best for longer so you can choose to swap your curtain pattern and fabric when you choose to, rather than when you have to.

Hanging your curtains after cleaning

  • Eyelet Curtains - Start with one end of the curtain with the front facing you. Place the eyelet over the pole so that only the front of the curtain can be seen once hung. Carry on placing the eyelets through in a concertina fashion. Once both curtains have been replaced tighten up bracket screws.

  • Pencil Pleat Curtains - Insert your curtain hooks, starting with the middle point on the header tape and working to the outer edge of the curtain, leaving around 5cm between hooks. If your curtain does not have an overlap, put the hook on the curtain in the middle of the window on the 2nd to end pocket to allow a curtain overlap once the curtain is drawn. This is required on the curtain to the left as you walk into the room, to ensure that no light can be seen between the curtains when drawn.

  • Pinch Pleat Curtains - A unique feature of these curtains is that you can adjust the drop by moving the hook down the slider. This process can be repeated until you are satisfied with the look. Pinch pleat curtains have the pleats permanently sewn in and will be made to fit the exact width of the track or pole.
