The 10th birthday of Scotland’s premier arts and crafts open studios event – the Spring Fling, has proven to be a great success, particularly for installation artist Alice Francis.
Commissioned with the task of delivering an exciting public arts piece for the event, Francis enlisted the help of loose cover specialists Plumbs to produce a bespoke made-to-measure cover for the exterior of a Galloway cottage.
The extraordinary feat proved to be a huge success, with the specially made loose covers fitting snugly around the contours of the building, including its three large chimneys. The aim of the project was to challenge convention with an unusual and unexpected piece within the Galloway countryside.
Francis even went to the lengths of covering herself in the same archetypal floral fabric as her cottage covers. She wore a suit made from the Plumbs fabric, standing out from the crowd and merging into her latest arts piece.
Visitors to the event, including excited members of the Plumbs team, were awed by the extravagant display. Christine Breakall, Plumbs production manager who liased with Francis throughout the preparation of the project expressed her delight at the final result:
“Helping to cover an entire building was a great challenge for us and to have achieved it with such success proves our motto to be true, that Plumbs really can cover almost anything!” she continues “It has been a true delight to work with Alice on this project and we wish her every success in her future ventures.”
The remainder of the event also proved a success for local artists and craftsman who reported increase in footfall and sales over the course of the 4 day celebration. Visitors arrived from all over the UK and a handful even travelled from Australia to be part of the Spring Fling.
